Lingap-Hapunan Project: A Meal for Every UP Student in Need

For Mariella Castanol, a BS Chemical Engineering student at the University of the Philippines (UP), financial struggles have become as challenging as her academic load. Despite benefiting from free tuition and a monthly stipend, the loss of her father's job has made everyday expenses a burden. There have been days when hunger was the only option she had, until hope arrived through the Lingap-Hapunan Project.

Launched on October 29, 2024, the Lingap-Hapunan Project is a collaborative effort by the UP Alumni Association (UPAA), the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA), the Office of Student Development Services (OSDS), and UP Gyud Food Hub. Designed to provide free dinners to financially struggling students, the program initially supports 50 beneficiaries from UP Diliman who fall under the FDS bracket, receiving full tuition discounts and a PHP 5,000 monthly stipend.

During the launch, UP President Angelo Jimenez assured students that their well-being is a top priority. “Titiyakin [natin] ang kanilang tagumpay (We will make sure you succeed),” he said. The project symbolizes the enduring support of the university, with students presenting their food vouchers at any of the 10 participating UP Gyud Food Hub restaurants for their complimentary meals.

UPAA President Robert Aranton sees this initiative as a way for alumni to give back to the institution that once nurtured them. Meanwhile, UP Gyud Food Hub's Jose Magsaysay Jr. emphasized their commitment to serving the entire UP community.

With the Lingap-Hapunan Project, UP aims to tackle one of the most fundamental needs of its students—access to nutritious food. By addressing hunger, the university hopes to alleviate financial burdens and ensure that students like Mariella can focus on their studies without the distraction of an empty stomach. This initiative marks a significant step towards a more supportive and nurturing academic environment.
